- Choose hard-to-break passwords and change them regularly. Never share your password with anyone. Special characters and a mix of letters and numbers strengthens the security of your password. Avoid obvious choices, such as your birthdate, Social Security number, or address. For further safety, you may also want to use a unique password for your ICON account.
- Use anti-virus software. You can choose among several easy-to-install packages. These can protect your computer from rogue programs that can capture and send personal information from your computer to another party.
- Use a firewall. Personal firewalls may use software and hardware to guard your computer. These can prevent outsiders from taking over your computer. Firewalls are especially helpful if you have a cable modem or DSL, which tend to make your computer more vulnerable to online hacking.
- Keep your system software up-to-date. Using the latest operating system and current browsers means you are using the Internet with the latest safeguards in place. Download patches whenever necessary to block your system against new hacks and security gaps in your software.
- Clean out your cache or temporary folders. After viewing accounts at ICON or other online services, close out of your browser and delete any temporary files. To configure your browser to automatically (or manually) delete the information stored in these folders, consult the User Manual, FAQ, or Help function of your browser and operating system software.
